NYCHA Marlboro Agricultural Education Center
Agritecture developed a comprehensive proposal for the NYCHA Marlboro Agricultural Education Center. This project aims to create an innovative urban agriculture education center in Brooklyn, New York, that serves as a source of fresh produce and a hub for education, job training, internships, and community leadership.
Objectives:
- Site and Facility Design: Planned a new 8,000 square foot building including a greenhouse, multipurpose room, teaching kitchen, indoor market, administrative offices, restrooms, refrigerated storage, and a loading area.
- Technology Integration: Recommended various planting techniques such as hydroponics and aquaponics, along with systems for seeding, harvesting, and biosecurity.
- Economic Modeling: Developed an economic model to simulate performance, including capital costs, operational costs, revenue considerations, and ROI projections.
- Sustainability Features: Incorporated sustainable design elements such as a rainwater system, photovoltaics, and other resource reduction systems.
Key Activities:
- Equipment Selection: Provided guidance on selecting and communicating with appropriate system vendors for the greenhouse and interior systems.
- Farm Design Support: Assisted in the layout of the greenhouse and interior systems, ensuring integration with other components of the project.
- Project Management: Managed project planning, vendor negotiations, and coordinated with contractors to ensure efficient progress.
- Client Collaboration: Engaged in regular meetings and communications to align on project goals and updates.
Outcomes:
- Created a detailed, viable plan for an urban agriculture center that supports community education and provides fresh produce.
- Ensured the design incorporates sustainable practices and technologies.
- Provided a clear pathway to economic viability and community impact.
