Middle School Students In NYC Grow Produce For Their School's Cafeteria
BROWNSVILLE
Brownsville Multi-Service Family Health and Wellness Center has partnered with Teens for Food Justice to grow produce without using dirt.
Instead of dirt, the middle schoolers involved in the program are using coconut husks to grow their own produce.
Three classes in grades six through eight help seeding, transplanting and then harvesting three times a week, as well as sometimes after school.
The Brownsville Collaborative Middle School cafeteria orders herbs and leafy greens from the center directly.
